Travel Light

It all started on a trip to visit my girl Cate in Austin, TX. Austin+Liz+Yoga=Love at First Sight. Thank you, Austin. Austin is the yoga capital of the world. Okay, so it's not. I just Googled it and that distinction has been taken by Rishikesh, a city in India (makes sense), a fact confirmed by Wikipedia analysis. But that's beside the point. This post is not about yoga or India, it's about the quote I found in a yoga magazine at Magnolia in Austin.

"Travel light, live light, spread the light, be the light."
Yogi Bhajan

I know, life-changing, right? (Brooke if you read this: Do more; Be better). Since then, I've been making conscious efforts to minimize the possessions in my life. I got rid of my mountain bike. I hardly ever carry a purse. I downloaded the kindle app on my iPod Touch. I got rid of like 90 pairs of shoes (not really 90, but like, a lot). In spite of these changes, I still have a long way to go.

Not so for my ex-roommate Allison. Check out this picture of her as she headed off to Georgia to start her new life:

Yes indeed. My girl Allison has EVERYTHING SHE OWNS in that car and ROOM FOR A PASSENGER. (Sorry for yelling). The girl has me beat by about 2 carloads and that's not counting furniture (somehow I feel like furniture shouldn't count?) But anyway, Allison is an inspiration to all of us. It reminds me of the Alexander Solzhenitsyn quote that I originally found from Ammon.

"Own only what you can carry with you; know language, know countries, know people. Let your memory be your travel bag. "

Yes, please. I'll start with countries. Maybe European countries. Just let me run a couple of carloads to DI real quick.

  1. Great quotes. Questionable choice for "an inspiration for us all". Also, I miss you. You're rad.

  2. I love this post. It's something that I've been thinking about a lot over the past year. Getting rid of stuff I don't need and only keeping those things that are necessary or that bring beauty into my life frees up my life, mind, and heart for more worthwhile things. Thanks for the reminder!

  3. I think I did read this. Or maybe not. It sounds familiar, but maybe that's because it sounds like Liz. :)
