Facebook Deactivation

As you know, I recently deactivated my facebook account.
It's been a couple months now, and I honestly think it's one of the best decisions I ever made.

The benefits?

Missing out on the election debacle.

Being more productive with my time.

Working harder to stay in touch with people and subsequently feeling like my relationships are better and more substantial, if fewer in number.

Not once in the time since I deactivated my account have I found myself looking at so and so's sister in law's little sister's old roommate's wedding pictures.

Feeling no pressure dating wise about when to post pictures of me with certain charming young men and therefore avoiding any ensuing insinuations.

I never find myself doing something so that I can change my profile pic, and I never think about what my next status is going to be.

I'm going to bed at a much more reasonable hour.

I can't compare the minute details of my life to the lives of my fbook friends.

I feel less pressure to prove to people that I'm awesome. I just let myself be me.

Drawbacks?

I'm missing out on a lot of ad copy, seriously, like, dozens of ads for christianmingle.com.

Theoretically, I'm like, not getting invited to as many parties and stuff. Although, how would I know if I'm missing out on them if I never hear about them in the first place?

I'm less informed about things as they go viral. I'm like, at least 71 hours behind on all things youtube.

I can't like things on facebook to win free stuff. Like, free iPads? I haven't gotten a single contest entry for one since I left the fb.

Setting people up on dates without the necessary pre-date-facebook-research. Liz induced literal blind dates are happening again thanks to my unpluggedness.

Also, I can no longer access the group, "Sleeping on campus since 1875." If you have fbook, you should totally check that one out. One of my old faves.

So yeah, there you have it. I'm glad I did it. I'll never say never (unless I'm singing along with the Biebs), but, at least for now, I have no plans to reactivate anytime soon.

If you're interested in deactivating your account, even on a trial basis, here's how.

  1. First of all, I was really tempted to like this post (using the Facebook button above), just for the sake of irony. I didn't though.

Lately I've been trying to figure out how I want to use Facebook going forward, and you've provided some very nice insights. So thanks for that. :)

  2. I knew you'd come around eventually. Welcome to the club, although from subsequent posts, I gather you may or may not have already defected. So I guess what I should really be saying is hope you enjoyed the club during your brief visit.
