October

In the hall at school today I overheard two guys talking.
Guy 1: I'd love to see the Cards take it.
Guy 2: I hate the Cards.

Raise your hand if you've heard some sort of variation on that discussion at least once during this World Series.

As for me, I don't ever like to see a team continue to dominate and go to The Series year after year, no matter how much I love Matt Holliday. (A lot, in case you didn't know). That being said, I hate the Red Sox the very most, and I'm pulling for the Cards.

In other news, I found this quote on Pinterest this morning.

I realize Ms. Lucy Maud probably wasn't talking about baseball, and was focused on crisp air and crisp leaves. I agree about the crispiness of Fall, and I especially agree with this quote because of baseball.

The thing about baseball

is that when I watch it I want to be like my dad.

And when I think about baseball I think about that time
S-- and I finally went to a game and
it started to rain
I don't even think we got to watch an inning
it started pouring
so we took ourselves,
that blue plaid blanket and
went up under the white canvas
probably sang some neil diamond and
talked about the romance of baseball
the classiness of pinstripes and clean-shaven faces
redemption and home runs

Some Monday Night Thoughts

Ask me if I bought Taylor's new album today.
You better believe it's love. Not that we're surprised.

Also of note,
The Giants advanced to the World Series when in
some sort of karmic justice,
bottom of the ninth, two outs.
Matt Holliday popped out to Marco Scutaro.

Matt had it coming to him after this most questionable play
in which he violently over-slid into Scutaro.
Did anyone else have Buster Posey flashbacks
(That Buster video is fairly graphic and not to ruin
the end or anything, but he breaks his leg, *gulp*)
Unlike Buster, Scutaro was unharmed in the incident,
the Giants won the pennant, and Scutaro was named NLCS MVP,
so the karma balances out. Matt loses. In more ways than one.
(But just for the record, Matt is still my boy).

And also, Giants vs. Tigers?
I will, of course, be wearing black.
Go Giants.
(You're welcome, Dad).

OCTOBER

How can you not be romantic about baseball?

Chicago

So I went to Chicago last weekend with my girl Sarah and her sister Naomi.
Ask me if it was awesome.
Yes it was. Thank you for asking.
Here, free of charge, are some photos.
Elevator in the Willis (formerly Sears) Tower.
The essential foot shot. It's fine, I'm wearing Chacos. Please don't judge. Sometimes I do that, but only when I travel (or bike long distances in street clothes).
And cell phones.
 The bean.
I seriously underestimated how awesome this thing was.
What's not to love about taking 450 pictures of yourself in a gigantic mirrored surface called Cloud Gate?
I can't think of one thing.
Also, I was cheering for the Cards that day. So that's awesomekward.
But my boy Matt got a great hit. And also Chris Carpenter pitched, so that's fun.
Wore my mustard yellow flats into the ground.
(Boot free since September 15th).
Surprisingly similar to the top of the Salt Lake LDS Temple, eh?
Also of note, it turns out that Loyola and Loyola Marymount are not the same school.

Home Run Derby

Are you aware that it's almost time for the Home Run Derby?
In honor of this momentous occasion, I present to you Mr. Josh Hamilton.
As you're aware, I love him.

The Red Sox

I was reading an article the other day about the ridiculous champagne parties in MLB clubhouses following big wins. The best part?

Johnette Howard: You know, the Red Sox started it.
Renee Richards: Everything the Red Sox do is stupid.

As Howard says, "So there you go."

BASEBALL

Text message from me to Sam: Baseball is the only stupid thing in life that I care about.

I sent this text after an amazing game 6 of the World Series where the Cardinals made an improbable comeback aided by Mr. David Freese (which has to be the coolest last name ever?).

Got this BP photo here
I realize it wasn't really that eloquent. Sort of like Scott Van Pelt's assertion earlier this year after arguably the best day ever in sports, "Sports are better than anything else, always." After I sent the text, I realized maybe I was being a little too hyperbolic, a little too superlative. (Sometimes I do that). And also, why did I use the word stupid? (Like I said, not that eloquent. Sometimes it happens).  But I got to thinking about all the "stupid" things in life that I love. Not stupid like annoying, but like things that don't actually matter that much. Things like biking, swimming, yoga, helicopters, clear skinny-mouthed Nalgene bottles, crunching on crushed ice, reading Malcolm Gladwell, the Top 25 Most Played songs on my iPod, wanting to bike to Heber, and changing my own bike tires. None of them are really all that important, but they are important because all the little things in life, the "stupid things," as it were, help make me who I am.

So, yeah.

Hi, I'm Liz, and I LOVE baseball.

Dear Tim Lincecum,
When is your pitching going to coincide with my traveling?

Kids and Baseball Make Me Happy (Individually and Collectively)

Sam and I went to the BYU baseball game on Thursday.
Just as we were arriving, it got delayed due to a lightening warning. As we were sitting under the white tent cover at Miller Field, it started to rain. The baseball team ran out to grab the plastic cover to shield the infield from the weather. A little boy behind us, maybe 4 or 5 years old asked:

But how will they see the bases?

People always wonder why they don't play baseball during the rain, and the little kiddo has a great point. They just can't see the bases through the tarp. And that's that.

Baseball season is upon us. The time of hot dogs and relish, Sweet Caroline and Take Me Out to the Ballgame, foul balls and home runs. April to October. The time of nearly everything I live and love for. Big Time Timmy Jim has already K'd 13 in one game, and we're only 10 days in. Ah, happiness.

         Dear Baseball,
         Welcome back, babe. Welcome back.
                                Love, Liz.

In honor of the fact that it's almost my favorite time of year, I give you, Big Time Timmy Jim.
